Description:
Ruben Santamarta has reported a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges.

The vulnerability is caused due to an integer overflow within the "IopfCompleteRequest()" function, which can be exploited to cause an integer overflow and potentially execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges.

The vulnerability is reported in the 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP, and Windows Vista.

Note: Successful exploitation requires additional software as attack vector.

The following applications have been identified as attack vectors:
* Gear Software CD DVD Filter Driver (GearAspiWDM.sys) prior to 2.011.2 (32 bit) and 2.008.2.1 (64 bit)
* GearAspiWDM.sys included in Apple iTunes 7.x
* GearAspiWDM.sys included in Symantec Norton 360 2.0 and prior,
* Symantec Norton Ghost 14.0 and prior,
* Symantec Norton Save and Restore 2.0 and prior, and
* Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 6.x, 7x, and 8x

Other versions and applications may also be affected.

Solution:
The core vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows kernel is currently unfixed. However, some 3rd party vendors have issued updates to close the attack vector.

-- Gear Software --

The vendor released updated drivers to close the attack vector.
